ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Shannon Smith led four players in double figures in scoring with 26 points and made it a double-double with 10 rebounds as the University of Michigan women's basketball team earned an 83-69 win over Wake Forest Wednesday night (Dec. 3) as part of the Big Ten /ACC Challenge inside Crisler Center.
Smith was 10-of-15 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free throw line and added six assists and three steals. Senior Cyesha Goree had 17 points and four steals, while junior Madison Ristovski had 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Freshman Katelynn Flaherty added 12 points for the Maize and Blue, and sophomore Siera Thompson had nine points and four assists.
The Maize and Blue shot 49.2 percent (31-of-63) from the floor and 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from the charity stripe. U-M hit five three-pointers, dished out 17 assists and forced 21 Wake Forest turnovers.
The teams went back-and-forth in the early going before Michigan went on a 7-0 run over a 46-second span to take a 19-11 lead with 13:10 showing on the first-half clock. Flaherty then came off the bench and scored eight straight points to push Michigan's lead to 27-14 with 11:09 left in the half.
The Wolverines took their largest lead of the first half off a pair of Flaherty free throws, doubling up the Demon Deacons, 40-20, with 4:43 left until halftime.
Michigan got two good looks on its final possession but could not convert to hit the locker room with a 47-31 lead. Smith led the way with 13 points and six boards, with Goree going for 13 points and four rebounds. Flaherty scored 10 points off the bench, and Thompson scored seven for the Wolverines. U-M shot 50 percent (18-for-36) in the first frame, while holding Wake Forest to just 37.9-percent shooting (11-for-29).
Ristovski hit a triple out of the halftime break for a 50-31 Wolverine lead. The Demon Deacons cut that lead to 11 (52-41) with 16:11, but U-M grew the advantage to 20 as Smith's fast-break layup with 12:07 left put Michigan up 63-43. Two Smith free throws with 6:54 left made it 73-58, and the lead stayed in double figures for the whole second stanza.
The Wolverines went 13-of-27 (48.1 percent) in the second half, and Ristovski and Smith each had 13 points in the second 20 minutes.
Michigan returns to the court on Tuesday (Dec. 9), hosting Princeton at Crisler Center at 6:30 p.m. in a doubleheader with the men's team.
