The University of Michigan women's basketball team (8-3, 0-0 Big Ten) travels to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers (4-6) to open Big Ten action on Sunday (Dec. 28). The game can be seen live on the Big Ten Network at 3 p.m. CST.
Michigan is looking for its sixth straight win in the Big Ten opener. It is the second straight season that Michigan has started conference play on the road, with U-M coming away with a 64-49 win at Ohio State last season.
U-M is trying for its first true road win of the season. U-M is 6-1 at home, 2-0 at neutral sites and 0-2 in true road contests.
Wisconsin leads the all-time series against U-M, 39-23, but Michigan has won three in a row over the Badgers. Michigan swept the season series from UW last year, winning 70-62 in Ann Arbor and 60-44 in Madison.
Michigan has recorded back-to-back games with at least 20 assists, going for 20 against Canisius (Dec. 19) and 23 against EMU (Dec. 22). Michigan had not had a 20-assist game this season prior to that.
Head coach Kim Barnes Arico is entering her third Big Ten season as the U-M head coach. KBA has a 17-15 record in her first two seasons during B1G play. Michigan has never dipped below .500 at any point since Barnes Arico took over.
Sophomore Danielle Williams recorded a career-best six steals in U-M's 81-52 win over Eastern Michigan (Dec. 22) to become the first player to record at least five steals in a game since Jenny Ryan on March 2, 2012, against Ohio State. Michigan had 18 steals against EMU, the most since going for 18 against Florida Atlantic on Nov. 14, 2011.
Head coach Kim Barnes Arico picked up her 50th win at Michigan in last week's 81-52 win over Eastern Michigan. Barnes Arico is in her third season at Michigan and carries a 50-28 record. She is the fifth coach in U-M history to win at least 50 games, and she reached the mark the fastest.
Michigan features four double-figure scorers in Katelynn Flaherty (13.9 ppg), Cyesha Goree (13.4 ppg), Shannon Smith (11.7 ppg) and Siera Thompson (10.9 ppg). Michigan is 7-1 this season when at least three players score in double figures. Michigan has had seven different players this season record a double-figure scoring game. U-M's fifth-leading scorer is Nicole Elmblad, who is averaging 7.5 points per game. U-M is 4-0 when Elmblad reaches double figures.
