Wolverines Complete Fall Season with Annual Michigan Classic

BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan rowing team competed in the seventh annual Michigan Classic against the men's club team on Friday (Nov. 7), completing the 2014 fall season at Belleville Lake. The event pitted eight men's varsity eight crews (including four freshman-only boats) against six women's eight crews (including three novice boats) and the women's first varsity four crew.
"I thought we had great conditions for racing, nice flat water, and we had good performances across the board," said head coach Mark Rothstein. "I think this team has done a great job, and we've seen dramatic improvement throughout the fall. I think that goes to our senior leadership. It's a very coachable team and if we keep the attitude and the approach that we've had, we're going to continue to improve."
In near darkness, the men's "B" crew finished with the fastest time of the day, crossing the finish line with a time of 12:34.8. The top women's varsity eight crew, the 1V8, finished with the fourth-fastest time at 13:01.5.
In the head race format, boats went off in intervals determined by both coaching staffs. The first boat to cross the finish line was declared the winner. The women's 1V4 crew -- Noa Rothstein, Georgia Williams, Susie Stevens, Lauren Gilbert and Kelsi Harden -- earned the victory, crossing the finish line first in 15:15.1.
Michigan will now continue preparation for the spring season indoors before the team's annual trip to Florida. The Wolverines will compete against UCF and Tennessee in Orlando Feb. 14-15.
