Tonight's game was part of the 2014 Progressive Legends Classic Championship at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Michigan last played in the Legends Classic during the 2010-11 season. The Wolverines opened that year's Classic by winning a pair of regional games in Ann Arbor as well.
After tonight's loss, U-M trails Villanova in the schools' all-time series with a record of 1-2.
The last time the Wolverines and Wildcats faced off prior to tonight's action was in the 1985 NCAA Tournament, when U-M fell by nearly the exact same score: 59-55. Villanova went on to win the NCAA Title that year.
The battle of the boards was a close one, with U-M pulling down 31 rebounds to Villanova's 35. Michigan has at least 30 rebounds in four of five games so far this season.
After a slow start from the floor, shooting 29.6 percent (8-for-27) in the opening frame, the Wolverines shot 51.7 percent (15-for-29) in the second half to finish with a clip of 41.1 percent (23-for-56).
The Maize and Blue had a trio of scorers in double figures: Caris LeVert (game-high 16 points), Zak Irvin (11) and Derrick Walton Jr. (10)
Kam Chatman set a new career best with six points (3-for-5) and hit his first triple as a Wolverine.
