The Wolverines set a new program record for goals in a Big Ten contest, defeating Penn State 8-1 at Yost Ice Arena. Michigan matched its season high for goals (10/24 vs. UMass-Lowell) and recorded its most goals in a game at Yost Ice Arena since a 10-3 win over St. Lawrence on Oct. 13, 2011.
Michigan scored five third-period goals in the game, the first time that the Wolverines have had five goals in a period since March 14, 2008, in a CCHA Quarterfinal victory (10-1) over Nebraska Omaha at Yost Ice Arena.
Thirteen different Wolverines recorded a point in the contest, matching a season high set on Nov. 15 in a 6-3 win over AIC.
Michigan is now 3-4 in the all time series against Penn State. The Wolverines are now 6-3-2 against Big Ten opponents at Yost Ice Arena.
In 19 games against Guy Gadowsky coached teams, Michigan is 11-8 including a 3-4 record against the Nittany Lions. Gadowsky was the head coach at former CCHA Alaska-Fairbanks from 1999-2004 before moving on to become the head coach at Princeton.
With a second-period goal, Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves extended his point streak to five games (2G, 3A). JT Compher and Max Shuart picked up assists on the play. Since the line has been paired together on Nov. 14, they have recorded a combined for 16 points (7G, 9A) in four games.
JT Compher recorded a season-high three points on the night (2G, A), his third career multiple-goal game. Compher, who led Michigan in points last season, snapped a 20-game goal-scoring drought dating back to Feb. 14.
Shuart set a career high with three assists on the night and has points in four of his last five games with three goals and four assists in that span.
With his third-period shorthanded goal and an assist on Tyler Motte's second-period goal, Andrew Copp extended his point streak to five games. He leads the team with eight points (5G, 3A) during that span.
Freshmen Dylan Larkin (2A) and Zach Werenski (2A) each recorded points, giving the Michigan freshman class points in 10 of the Wolverines' 11 games.
With Michael Downing's third-period goal, his third of the season, Michigan defenseman have scored seven goals this season in 11 games. In 2013-14, Michigan defensemen combined for eight goals in 35 games.
