Wolverine Quartet Named to NFHCA All-Region Teams

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team placed four players on the 2014 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-West Region teams, the organization announced Monday (Nov. 17). Fifth-year seniors Ainsley McCallister and Leslie Smith were selected to the first team, while juniors Shannon Scavelli and Lauren Thomas garnered second-team recognition.
McCallister earned regional first team for the second straight season after recording career highs in all major statistical categories. She matched a career best with six goals, scoring five in the Wolverines' final four games, and led the team with 18 assists, ranking second in the Big Ten with .90 assists per game. A two-time All-Big Ten first team selection, McCallister posted 15 career goals and 35 assists. She wrapped her career ranking fourth among U-M's all-time leaders in the latter category.
Smith earned her second career regional team selection -- first to the first team -- after leading the Wolverines with a career-best 14 goals and 33 assists. She scored at least one goal in 11 of 20 games this season, including seven of the final two games, and boasted three multi-goal efforts.U-M's primary penalty-corner striker, Smith also garnered All-Big Ten first team honors. She ended her career with 32 goals, 30 assists and 94 points, ranking sixth in career assists and 10th in career points.
Scavelli claimed her first career regional team selection after posting seven goals, four assists and 18 points -- career bests in all three categories. She recorded two multi-goal performances and three game-winning goals in consecutive games against Central Michigan, Providence and VCU.
Thomas earned regional second team honors for the third straight season after posting a pair of assists -- both on late second-half game-winners -- and anchoring the Wolverine defense. As U-M's sweeper, Thomas helped hold the opposition to just 1.52 goals per game and 4.85 penalty corners per game. Michigan held opponents to single-digit shots in 15 games this season, including 10 of the final 11 games.
The Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-America teams will be announced on Monday, Dec. 1, a week after the conclusion of the NCAA Championship in College Park, Maryland.
