U-M Cannot Close Out No. 10 Illinois in Five-Set Defeat

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team won the first two sets against No. 10 Illinois, including a big comeback in set two, but fell in a five-set match to the Fighting Illini Saturday night (Nov. 1) inside Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 24-26, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18 and 15-9.

The Wolverines filled the stat sheet in the five-set match. Sophomore Abby Cole had 20 kills, while freshman Adeja Lambert added 16 kills and 13 digs to go along with three service aces. Junior Tiffany Morales had a match-high 24 digs. She was one of five Wolverines with double figures in digs. Senior Lexi Dannemiller also had a double-double with 57 assists and 13 digs, while junior Lindsey Lerg had three service aces and 12 digs. Junior Krystalyn Goode led Michigan with four blocks, and freshman Caroline Knop had nine kills and 12 digs.
The Maize and Blue fed off 20 kills for a first-set win. The Wolverines trailed as late as 15-14 but responded to take a 20-17 lead after Lambert's service ace. Illinois came back to tie the set at 22. That is when Cole's kill and a Lerg ace gave U-M set point. Illinois fought off two set points, before Cole closed the book on the set with back-to-back kills.
Illinois led 18-11 in the second set, before a furious Michigan rally put the Wolverines up 2-0 in the match. Lerg served three straight points to cut the Fighting Illini lead to 18-15 and then Cole helped Michigan end on a 9-0 run as she served the final eight points. Dannemiller and Goode had back-to-back blocks in that run, while Cole and Lambert traded kills for the final four Wolverine points. Michigan held Illinois to a .068 hitting percentage in set two.
The Fighting Illini's Morganne Criswell and Jocelynn Birks had six and five kills, respectively, in set three as Illinois won 25-19. That duo then combined for 12 kills in a set-four win. Lambert had five kills in that fourth set, but the Fighting Illini forced set five after hitting .366. Illinois scored the fifth set's first three points and did not look back. The Fighting Illini led 8-5 at the changeover and went on a 3-0 run in the middle to take an 11-5 lead.
The Wolverines hit .185 in the match, compared to .257 for Illinois. Michigan had an 86-82 dig advantage and six service aces.
Michigan continues its four-match homestand on Friday night (Nov. 7) against Wisconsin. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
NOTES
• Michigan is now 1-5 in five-set matches this season.
• The Wolverines now trail in the all-time series with Illinois 46-23. Michigan also has lost consecutive five-set matches to the Fighting Illini.
• The Maize and Blue played its eighth ranked team of 2014 tonight in No. 10 Illinois. The Wolverines are 2-6 against ranked teams this season.
• Sophomore Abby Cole had her third 20-plus kill match this season as she had 20 terminations against Illinois. She also led Michigan in kills for the 11th time this season.
• Junior Tiffany Morales moved into fifth place on Michigan's all-time digs list. Morales passed Lexi Zimmerman (2007-10) on the list and now has 1,361 digs.
• Freshman Adeja Lambert recorded her third career double-double in tonight's Illinois match with 16 kills and 17 digs.
• Lambert's 17 digs was a career high, surpassing her 13 digs vs. Michigan State on Sept. 30.
• Senior Lexi Dannemiller tallied her 44th career double-double as she had 57 assists and 13 digs to go along with three blocks.
• Dannemiller's 57 assists are a season high, breaking her previous high of 55 at Indiana on Sept. 27.
