WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Purdue in its regular-season finale on Saturday (Nov. 1) at Boilermaker Soccer Complex. With an 8-2-3 record in Big Ten play, the Wolverines finish in third place in the conference, marking the third straight season U-M has finished third or better.
After more than 60 minutes of scoreless soccer, sophomore Nicky Waldeck broke the stalemate in the 63rd minute, as sophomore Jessica Heifetz threaded a long through ball from just over midfield to Waldeck, who put a shot past Purdue keeper Maddy Olsen as she came out to challenge at the top of the penalty box.
A little more than two minutes later, the Boilermakers tied the match 1-1 on a penalty kick from Maddy Williams, following an inadvertent hand ball in the box by the Wolverines.
Neither team managde the game-winner in the remaining 25 minutes of regulation, forcing the game to overtime.
Three minutes into the first overtime period, Purdue was awarded its second penalty kick of the match. Mollie Kuramoto's shot attempt collided with the cross bar and bounced back into play, where it was cleared away by the Michigan defense. That proved to be the best chance for either team in the two overtime periods, and Michigan eventually earned its third tie its last four matches.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Hinz had six saves in net for Michigan, including a diving save in the second half to keep Purdue from taking the lead.
U-M begins the postseason next Wednesday (Nov. 5) at the Big Ten Tournament in West Lafayette, Ind. As the No. 3 seed, Michigan will play No. 6 Minnesota in the quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. The Wolverines defeated the Golden Gophers during the regular season, 2-1 in overtime, on Sept. 12.
