ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan softball team slugged four home runs on Sunday (Oct. 5), accounting for all six runs in a 6-3 win over Kentucky, in the finale of an exhibition series at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
The Wolverines took the series from the Wildcats by winning the final two games. In the nightcap of Saturday's (Oct. 4) doubleheader, the Maize and Blue hit five home runs.
Junior Sierra Romero (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) smacked two home runs for the second game in a row. She launched a two-run homer in the first inning, eliminating Kentucky's early two-run lead, and then hit a solo shot laser beam out to right in the third.
Sophomore Lindsay Montemarano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) followed Romero's solo shot with one of her own, and the back-to-back homers gave Michigan its final run in win.
Senior Sara Driesenga (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) put Michigan on top in the bottom of the second with a two-run homer. Following a two-out walk to freshman Tera Blanco (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina), Driesenga punched a line drive homer out to left field and built a lead that the Wolverines never relinquished.
Driesenga was a big reason for that, as she went six-and-two-thirds innings in the circle. After a shaky first inning -- UK's Griffin Joiner hit a two-run homer -- the righty settled in. She only allowed three hits after the first and showed flashes of dominance. Driesenga struck out the side in the second, and set down nine in all. Senior Haylie Wagner (Orange, Calif./El Modena) came in to get the final out and earned the save.
Romero led the nine-hit attack with her two homers and a double, Montemarano had two hits and reached base three times.
The Wolverines will complete their fall exhibition season against Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, Oct. 8. The game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex and admission is free.
