ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Senior forward Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and freshman goalkeeper Sam Swenson (Harrogate, England/Ashville College) of the University of Michigan field hockey team earned Big Ten Conference Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday (Oct. 21). Guttman was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Swenson claimed the Freshman of the Week award.
The weekly accolades followed the Wolverines' 2-1 victory against No. 9-ranked Northwestern last Friday (Oct. 17) at Phyllis Ocker Field. Guttman netted the game-winning goal at the 56:03 mark, earning a tip goal off a late penalty-corner opportunity. She got her stick on junior Lauren Thomas' (Aylesbury, England/Aylesbury HS) direct shot and redirected it into the upper right corner of the cage. It marks Guttman's second goal of the season and fifth career game-winner.
Swenson was stout in the Wolverine cage, earning four saves -- all in the second half -- to keep the Wildcats off the board for the final 62 minutes of the contest. Northwestern elevated its pressure after the late Wolverine goal, but Swenson turned away two corner opportunities and two shots to preserve the U-M advantage. Swenson ranks third among the conference with a 1.33 goals-against average.
The weekly accolades are the first for the Wolverines this season. Guttman previously garnered two Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors during the 2011 campaign.
Michigan returns to competition this weekend, hosting in-state rival Michigan State at 3:30 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 24) before wrapping up the weekend against New Hampshire at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 26) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
