ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team held the early lead but could not hold on, falling to No. 7 Stanford, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 12) at Phyllis Ocker Field. It is the Wolverines' third overtime loss to a top-12 opponent this season.
Fifth-year senior Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) put Michigan on the board early, extending her scoring streak to four straight games with a redirection goal at the 6:16 mark. Freshman Veerle Lubbers (Arnhem, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium) initiated the play from the left corner deep in Cardinal territory, carrying the ball into the circle and sending a goalmouth pass to Smith on the right post. The Wolverine senior got her stick on it to tip it into the Stanford cage for her career-best 10th goal of the season.
The Wolverines maintained their advantage for the remainder of the first half and several minutes into the second, until Stanford broke through on a tip goal of their own. Maddie Secco lobbed a high ball into the circle from near the right sideline, and Katie Keyser lifted her stick over her head to connect with it, redirecting past freshman goalkeeper Sam Swenson (Harrogate, England/Ashville College).
Michigan controlled possession in Stanford's defensive 25 for nearly the entire final 15 minutes but could not convert.
The Wolverines also mounted the first attack in overtime, driving the ball into the Cardinal circle but failing to get a shot off. Stanford scored on the ensuing counter attack, pushing the ball down the field before finding an odd-man advantage in the circle. Secco pushed the ball to Lauren Becker, who knocked it into the cage from the left side of the circle.
Shots were even at 8-8 through the contest, while U-M outcornered the Cardinal, 3-0. Swenson earned four saves in the Wolverine cage, and senior/junior Mackenzie Ellis (Madison, N.J./Madison HS) added a spectacular defensive save on a high shot in the first half. Stanford goalkeeper Dulcie Davies stopped five of U-M's six shots on goal.
The Wolverines will remain at home next Friday (Oct. 17), hosting Big Ten rival Northwestern at 7 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field. The game will be streamed on BTN Plus. Admission is free.
