ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team did not allow a shot on goal en route to its fourth straight Big Ten victory -- a 3-0 triumph at Indiana on Saturday (Oct. 11) at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Wolverines moved to 7-1-0 in Big Ten Conference play and into a tie for first place with Penn State (7-1-0), which suffered its first conference loss to Rutgers today.
The Wolverines took command early, netting a pair of goals in a one-minute span. The first came at 14:40, as sophomore/freshman Ani Sarkisian (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill/Florida State) slipped a ball through to sophomore Madisson Lewis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth), who shot low far post past Indiana goalkeeper Sarah Stone. An Indiana defender attempted to clear the ball before it crossed the line, but she was unsuccessful.
Less than a minute later, a Hoosier hand ball in the box awarded a penalty kick to Michigan, and sophomore Nicky Waldeck (Chicago, Ill./Western Reserve Academy [OH]) stepped to the penalty spot and put U-M up 2-0 at 15:39.
After taking a 2-0 lead into halftime, the Wolverines were quick to push their lead to three goals just 1:15 into the second half. Just over midfield, Waldeck poked the ball away from an Indiana player straight to the feet of Sarkisian, who carried the ball up field and played a ball into the left side of the box for Waldeck to run onto. Waldeck drove a cross from the end line on the turf into the six-yard box to sophomore Jessica Heifetz (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional), who was making a run through the middle of the box. Heifetz beat a challenging IU keeper to the ball to knock it home from two yards out.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Hinz (Eldersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) was not tested by the Hoosiers in her fifth shutout of the season.
The Wolverines will now head back to Ann Arbor for a clash with Penn State, currently ranked No. 6 nationally, on Thursday (Oct. 16). The match will be a battle for first place in the Big Ten as both programs boast a 7-1 record in conference play, after PSU dropped a 1-0 decision to Rutgers today (Saturday, Oct. 11) to even the field. The match between the Wolverines and Nittany Lions will start at 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
