HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan water polo team dropped its spring-break road contest at No. 8 Hawaii, 9-3, on Wednesday evening (March 6) at the Rainbow Wahine's Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. U-M held with Hawaii through the opening quarter, before the perennial power pulled away with a four-goal second.

Hathaway Moore
Senior captain Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS) snapped a two-game scoring drought with a pair of goals, scoring in the first and fourth quarters, while junior captain Hathaway Moore (Atherton, Calif./Saint Francis HS), in her season debut, registered her first goal of the year in the third.
Senior goalkeeper Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) played the entirety of the contest in the Wolverine net, earning four saves -- two apiece in the first and third frames.
After a scoreless opening six minutes of the contest, the Rainbow Wahine broke through with back-to-back goals from Monika Eggens, including a 6-on-5 opportunity with 14 seconds left in the first quarter. Golden responded in short time, however, finding the back of the net on the U-M advantage with just one tick remaining.
Eggens completed her hat trick in the opening minute of the second quarter, kicking off a stretch of six straight Hawaii goals that provided the host an 8-1 advantage until late in the third quarter when Moore scored on a 6-on-5 with 26 seconds left in the frame. The teams traded goals in the fourth as Golden netted her second of the game on another 6-of-5 opportunity at the 4:55 mark.
The Wolverines will face Gannon at home next Friday (March 15) at 6 p.m., before the annual Wolverine Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (March 16-17) at Canham Natatorium.

Michigan Head Coach Matt Anderson
On the game ... "The difference in the game was Monika Eggens, who is arguably the best offensive player in college water polo. Our game plan worked in terms of everything except for the best player in the pool scored four goals, including three in the first half that separated. We did some good things. You could tell we hadn't played in a little while, but we still had an opportunity and stuck to our game plan, which was to control their best shooter."
On the return of junior captain Hathaway Moore ... "It was nice. She definitely brought a spark and did some great things. She did some things that she will improve upon. It was her first game in almost a year, so she was a little bit rusty. But she also provided us what I know she's going to provide us as the season goes on."
On the spring-break trip ... "Without a doubt, this has been a valuable experience. All told, over the six days we've been out here, they've probably only had about four hours to themselves. Everything else has been scripted out, whether it's physically working out or doing mental training. Considering more than half the team is freshmen, it will definitely benefit them, and we're definitely better now, as a team, than when we first got here. We still have a lot of work to do, but that's part of the excitement of getting back home and starting to apply some of the things we've talked about."
