SEATTLE, Wash. -- The No. 28-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped the doubles point and the first five singles matches off court in a 6-1 loss at No. 26 Washington on Saturday (Feb. 11) at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The loss halted the Wolverines' three-match win streak in non-conference action.
The Wolverines dropped the doubles point for just the second time this season as Washington claimed decisions at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, clinching the point in the latter. Junior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan Prep) and sophomore Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Old Bethpage JFK HS), ranked No. 22 nationally, won in the tiebreaker at the No. 1 spot, battling past Kyle McMorrow and Emmett Egger, 9-8 (3). After Washington used a late break to knot up the score, the U-M duo surged to an early lead to take the tiebreaker and secure its fourth straight win.
Washington won the first five matches off court, claiming straight-set decisions in each, to seal the dual victory. Sophomore Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys' School) earned the Wolverines' lone singles victory, defeating Max Manthou, 7-6 (1), 6-7 (5), 1-0 (3), at the No. 5 position.
King immediately preceded Franks off the court, falling to the Huskies' No. 15-ranked Kyle McMorrow, 6-3, 7-6 (6), at No. 1 singles. The loss was his second against McMorrow this season and ended King's four-match win streak.
The Wolverines will return home next Saturday (Feb. 18), hosting rival Notre Dame at 3 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan will raffle off tickets to the U-M/OSU basketball game, and any fan that shows their Michigan ice hockey or basketball ticket for the game on Feb. 18 will be entered to win a Michigan adidas prize pack.
