AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 31-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team claimed two doubles matches and won the first three singles matches off the court to cruise to a 4-0 shutout of No. 38 Maryland in the ITA Kickoff Weekend consolation contest Sunday (Jan. 29) at Texas' Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
The Wolverines claimed the doubles point for the fourth straight match after lopsided 8-3 victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Junior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan Prep) and sophomore Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Old Bethpage JFK HS) clinched the point with their decision over No. 36-ranked John Collins and Maros Horny at the top spot. It was their second win over a ranked team this season.
King added one of Michigan's three quick singles victories, earning a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Horny at the No. 1 position to improve to 3-1 in duals this season.
Sophomore Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys' School) and freshman Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) also improved to 3-1 with straight-set wins at the No. 5 and No. 3 spots, respectively. Petrone knocked off the Terps' lone ranked player, No. 121 Vlad Stefan, in the latter match, claiming a 6-4, 6-4 decision to clinch the Wolverine victory.
Michigan led in two of the three additional matches left on the court, needing just one more game from freshman Eli Brown (Toronto, Ontario/City Academy) to seal a two-set win at the No. 6 position.
The Wolverines (2-2) will return to the Varsity Tennis Center to host a pair of non-conference opponents this week. U-M will face Louisville at 5 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 2) before wrapping weekend action with a 6 p.m. dual against LSU on Saturday (Feb. 4).
