ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team took the best mark in 15 of the meet's 16 events to down in-state rival Michigan State, 171-120, on Senior Night on Friday (Jan. 27) inside Canham Natatorium. U-M won the first 13 events before exhibitioning the final three, swimming the fastest time in two of those.
The Wolverines owned their in-state rivals from the opening gun. They finished 1-2 in the opening race of the night, the 200-yard medley relay, as the two teams finished within two-tenths-of-a-second of each other. Senior Liz Koselka (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and freshman Michelle Stefandl (Princeton, N.J./Stuart Country Day School) followed suit in the 1,000-yard freestyle, as Koselka touched the wall at 10:15.36, with Stefandl at 10:17.46.
Michigan went 1-2-3 in the next two races. Senior Kristyne Cole (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) took top honors in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.57), as sophomore Courtney Beidler (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) was second (1:52.03), and junior Kally Fayhee (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary) was third (1:52.83). Freshman Claudia Lau (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Girls' School) won the 100-yard backstroke (56.54), while senior Liz Johnson (Milford, Mich./Milford) and freshman Kayla Douglas (Livonia, Mich./Franklin) took second and third, respectively.
More wins followed, including junior Julia Andracki (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.59), junior Adrienne Bicek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.12), and senior Caitlin Dauw (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) in the 50-yard freestyle (23.59). Junior Deirdre Jones (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville) won the 100-yard freestyle (51.95) out of the break, which was followed by successive wins from Johnson in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.09), junior Melissa Lang (Edison, N.J./Bishop George) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.65), and Beidler in the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.98).
Senior Amanda Lohman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) dominated on the diving boards in her final meet at Canham Natatorium. She scored a 363.15 on three-meter and 323.77 on one-meter, taking first place in both. Additionally, both scores were career highs.
Michigan will now spend the next three weeks recovering in anticipation of the Big Ten Championships, which begin on Wednesday, Feb. 15, in Iowa City, Iowa. The championships will run for four days through Feb. 18, with preliminaries at 11 a.m. (CST) and event finals at 6:30 p.m. each day.

Michigan improves to 33-2 all-time in dual meets against Michigan State. The Wolverines have won 24 straight against their in-state rivals.
Friday's meet was the final dual meet of Michigan's season before the Big Ten Championships in three weeks. The Wolverines went 4-1 in dual meets during the month of January.
Alexa Mehesan, who owns a 7-1 record in the 50-yard freestyle this season, did not swim that race against Michigan State. The only individual race she swam all night was the 100-yard butterfly, outpacing the field with a time of 55.27 (exhibitioned).
