
Michigan to Kick Off Fall Season at Harvard Tournament

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team opens the fall portion of its 2011-12 schedule this weekend (Fri-Sun., Sept. 23-25) at the Harvard Fall Chowder Invitational at the Beren Tennis Center in Cambridge, Mass. All eight Wolverines will be making the trip east in the first of Michigan's six fall tournaments. Joining U-M at Harvard is three-time defending national champion USC, Texas A&M and host Harvard.

Ranked Wolverines -- Junior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan HS), who was a 2010 ITA All-American, enters the fall season with a No. 8 national ranking. Joining King in the year's first national poll is sophomore Shaun Bernstein Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK HS), who makes his rankings debut at No. 125. King and Bernstein represent the Wolverines in the national doubles rankings at No. 33. [ Full ITA Rankings ]
A Look Back -- The Wolverines posted a 13-11 record in 2010-11 and qualified for the NCAA Championships for the sixth consecutive season. Senior Evan King became the program's 22nd All-American -- the third under head coach Bruce Berque -- after reaching the NCAA Sweet 16. King and Jason Jung were unanimous selections to the All-Big Ten first team. [ 2010-11 Statistics ]
Making Their Debut -- The Wolverines' three newcomers -- freshmen Eli Brown (Toronto, Ontario/City Academy), Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs School) and Michael Zhu (Princeton N.J./Keystone National HS) -- will all make their debut in the Maize and Blue this weekend at the Harvard Fall Chowder Invitational.
Coaching Staff -- Head coach Bruce Berque enters his eighth year at the helm of the Wolverine program, compiling a 109-73 overall record and 42-18 Big Ten mark over his tenure. Berque has led the Wolverines to six consecutive NCAA Championships berths, including the 2008 Sweet 16, and has finished among the top four of the Big Ten in six of seven seasons. Mark Merklein is in his first season as Michigan's assistant coach after joining the staff this past summer. A former ATP tour professional (1994-2005) and NCAA singles (1994) and doubles (1993) champion while at Florida, Merklein spent the previous six years as a national coach with the USTA Player Development Center in Boca Raton, Fla.
