BELLEVILLE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team kicked off the 2011-11 campaign with a fall scrimmage against Michigan State, Notre Dame and Eastern Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 18) at Belleville Lake.
The teams split up their eights into two heats. Within each heat there were five races, each lasting four minutes with a 26-stroke rate.
"I really liked that we raced with intensity," said head coach Mark Rothstein. "That was the most important thing today and it was great to see that effort."
The first head consisted of two Michigan boats, two MSU boats, two Notre Dame boats and one EMU boat. Michigan's 'A' boat won four of the five races, while its 'B' boat had three third-place showings and two runner-up finishes. The top Spartan crew had one first-place finish and two runner-ups.
The second heat featured three Michigan eights and a single eight from MSU, Notre Dame and EMU. MSU's 'C' boat had three wins, while U-M's 'C' and 'D' boats had a win apiece.
The Wolverines will race next on Saturday, Oct. 8, when Ohio State visits Belleville Lake for a non-scoring event.
