ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan Athletic Director Dave Brandon announced today (Friday, Aug. 5) the promotion of Elizabeth Heinrich to Chief of Compliance Services. Heinrich, who has served as the interim director of compliance since January 2011, will carry the title of Associate Athletic Director and will be a member of the department's Leadership Team.
"Elizabeth joined us in 2010 and brought a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge to our compliance department," said Brandon. "She has done a terrific job as our interim compliance leader and has proven her ability to provide strong leadership and clear direction to our student-athletes, coaches and fans. Elizabeth's legal training is a significant benefit as we strive to follow all of the NCAA rules and regulations throughout our department and in all 29 of our sports programs."
Heinrich joined the Michigan Athletic Department as an assistant athletic director for compliance in February 2010. She oversees the rules education program for coaches and staff and provides interpretations of NCAA bylaws for coaches, staff and student-athletes. In addition, Heinrich coordinates the student-athlete eligibility certification process and APR reporting process in partnership with the Registrar's Office and Academic Support Program. She is also the compliance services liaison to the Admissions Office.
Prior to joining the U-M staff, Heinrich worked at the University of Texas for four-plus years (May 2006-Feb. 2010). She began as a staff assistant in May 2006 and was promoted four months later to an assistant compliance director position. Heinrich spent her final three years as a compliance coordinator with the Longhorns. She was responsible for education, monitoring and development and enhancement of policies and procedures in areas of ethical conduct and gambling, amateurism, recruiting, awards and benefits and playing and practice seasons. In addition, Heinrich coordinated all coach and student-athlete compliance education meetings and the department's monthly newsletter.
Heinrich spent 11 months as an enforcement services intern at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) before joining the UT staff. She practiced as an attorney at Foley Hoag LLP in Boston, Mass., for four years. She also worked as an intern in the US Attorney's Office in Boston during the summer of 1998.
Heinrich earned a bachelor of arts degree in government and international studies from Notre Dame in 1994. She graduated magna cum laude from the Boston University School of Law in May 2000.
