ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office released the 22 Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2010-11 academic year on Friday (June 3), a male and female honoree from each of the 11 conference members. Fifth-year senior decathlete Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and senior first baseman Dorian Shaw (Burke, Va./J.W. Robinson) were named the University of Michigan's sportsmanship honorees, while one additional student-athlete from each varsity program was also recognized by distinguishing themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
The only three-time team captain in the 116-year history of U-M's track and field program, Shotwell graduated in May with a degree in political science. The U-M heptathlon and decathlon record-holder, he claimed the 2008 Big Ten heptathlon and decathlon titles and earned All-Big Ten second team in 2010. Shotwell was active in the Ann Arbor community, participating in a reading program with the Ann Arbor Public School system, making weekly visits to the U-M Mott Children's Hospital, and volunteering as a track and field coach at Slauson Middle School in Ann Arbor. He was also active with U-M's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).
A 2010 second team All-American at first base, Shaw was voted team captain of the 2011 Michigan softball squad. A sport management major, Shaw served as vice president on the SAAC executive board. She contributed to the organization and fundraising efforts for Michigan's annual Mock Rock talent show and participated in Michigan's Leaders for Life and Leadership Academy programs. She also participated in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign and participated in the 2010 and 2011 Michigan Women's Softball Academy whose proceeds also benefit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Shaw was active in the Michigan From the Heart organization, making visits to patients at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. On the field, Shaw knocked out 12 home runs, batted .365, and posted an incredible .595 on-base percentage in 2011. The school leader in career walks, she ended her U-M tenure second on the program list for home runs (58).
To earn the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, student-athletes must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree. From each university's list, two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected.
