ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's golfer Lion Kim (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary Prep School) was honored today (Thursday, June 23) with PING Division I All-America third team honors by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The honor is the second in Kim's career; he received honorable mention in 2009. Kim becomes the fifth Wolverine to earn multiple All-America honors, joining Bill Newton (1965, '66), Randy Erskine (1968, '70), Tom McParlan (1974, 75) and Michael Harris (1998, 2000).
Earning PING All-Midwest Region honors for the third straight season, Kim highlighted his senior campaign by winning two tournaments, leading U-M to its first NCAA Regional title and a trip back to the NCAA Championships. He also competed in the 2011 Masters.
Kim captured the first two medalist honors of his career by winning the 2010 Windon Memorial Classic and the 2011 NCAA Central Regional, which helped U-M advance to its second NCAA Championships in the last three years. He nearly won his third event at NCAAs, tying for third and helping U-M to a 10th-place finish in the stroke-play portion of the national finals.
Kim, a 2011 All-Big Ten selection, set the senior season records for scoring average with a 72.09 per-round mark, just missing the U-M all-time single season mark of 72.00 held by teammate Matt Thompson (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview). Kim led U-M with 19 total rounds of par or better this season, including carding a career-best 65 twice -- first round (-7) of the 2010 Bridgestone Intercollegiate and final round (-6) of the NCAA Central Regional. He has seven top-20 finishes, including five in the top 10 and four in the top five. Overall, he has finished as the top Wolverine in six-of-14 events.
After winning the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in the summer of 2010, Kim earned an invitation to compete in the 2011 Masters, where he missed the cut after shooting rounds of 76 and 72.
