LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan water polo team followed up its CWPA Western Division championship victory with a win over Maryland, 9-5, on Saturday evening (April 9) at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium.
Senior Alison Mantel (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) scored twice, had three assists and pulled a trio of steals. Senior Lauren Orth (Poway, Calif./Poway) and junior Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) each had two goals in the contest and freshman Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland) chipped in a pair of helpers.
Junior Morgan Turner (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) made seven saves and sophomore Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) had five steals to lead the defensive effort.
After trailing 1-0 through one period, Michigan exploded for four goals in the second frame to take a 4-2 lead into halftime. Orth scored her second goal of the game and sophomore Lauren Colton (Tustin, Calif./Tesoro) chipped in a marker to extend the U-M advantage to 6-3 after three periods. Mantel scored a pair in the fourth period to go with a goal from Cobb to help the Maize and Blue cruise to victory.
Michigan will wrap up the Bison Tournament on Sunday (April 10) when it faces Harvard at 8:30 a.m. and George Washington at 11:30 a.m.
