BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan water polo team edged No. 12-ranked Indiana, 9-8, on Saturday afternoon (March 26) at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center and in front of a national television audience on the Big Ten Network.
Sophomore Lauren Colton (Tustin, Calif./Tesoro) led the U-M offense with three goals. Junior Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) netted the game-winner and created four U-M power plays from two meters.
Sophomore Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) made eight stops, including a pivotal save on a five-meter penalty shot late in the final quarter.
Senior Alison Mantel (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) scored on a laser into the far 90 from seven meters out with four seconds left in the third period, sparking the Maize and Blue's final push to victory. U-M added a one-time goal from freshman Kelsey Nolan (San Jose, Calif./Leland) and a goal at two-meters from Colton early in the fourth to open up an 8-5 lead with just under seven minutes to go in the contest. Indiana answered with back-to-back markers to pull back to within one goal. After Cobb batted in a pass from senior Keller Felt (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) at two meters with 3:31 remaining, Adamson slammed the door on the comeback, stopping a penalty shot with her outstretched left hand.
Par for the course, the two teams battled back and fourth for much of the contest. Mantel scored her first of two to put U-M up early, but Indiana leveled the score at 1-1 after the first period. Senior Lauren Orth (Poway, Calif./Poway) converted a five-meter penalty 16 seconds into the second period to put UM back in the lead. The Hoosiers answered with a pair of goals from five meters, but Michigan got a marker from two meters off a backhand from Colton to send the teams to halftime tied at 3-3.
Special teams ruled the third period, with U-M scoring a power-play goal from sophomore Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) on the left post and a five-meter marker from Colton, before Mantel's goal sparked the final U-M rally starting late in the third period.
The Wolverines will be back in action next weekend (Sat-Sun., April 2-3) for the Tiger Tournament in Princeton, N.J. Michigan and Bucknell will play a divisional contest on Saturday (April 2) at 10 a.m. to open up the weekend.

Michigan Head Coach Matt Anderson
On the win ... "We had to get back to what we do best which is to push the pace while not forgetting about defense. The ladies did a wonderful job after falling behind 4-3 and then exploding to go ahead 8-5. That was purely them putting out, not only the offensive effort to get four of the next five, but also defensively to shut them down during that time. We knew what we had to do and we were expecting it to be a one-goal game. The players played with the sense of not getting too hung up on one play either way and just play to the end. That is what we did."
On U-M's dominance at two meters ..."Both Meagan Cobb and Lauren Colton controlled two meters better than I expected them to. I thought with IU dropping that they would try to take (our two-meter game) away, but Colton had three goals and Cobb had four drawn kickouts. Cobb countered 20 meters to get that goal at the end."
