With the loss, Michigan falls to 16-11 overall, 6-8 in the Big Ten. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Wolverines.
Michigan is now 71-85 (67-81*) all-time against Illinois. The Wolverines have a 23-55 record against the Fighting Illini in Champaign. John Beilein is now 2-5 against Illinois in his career. The Illini have won four straight in the series.
This was the only regular-season meeting between U-M and Illinois. The Wolverines and Fighting Illini also met just once last season. Purdue is the other Big Ten opponent that U-M played once this season.
Jordan Morgan led the Wolverines with 12 points, marking the 11th double-figure scoring game of the season for the freshman and the fourth time he has led U-M in scoring.
Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 10 points to record his eighth consecutive double-figure scoring game. Hardaway came into the game averaging 12.7 points per game, second among freshmen in the Big Ten.
Tim Hardaway Jr. recorded a new career high with five assists. Hardaway's previous best was four, registered three times this season, most recently against Northwestern on Feb. 9.
Darius Morris had 10 points and seven assists. Morris has scored in double figures in 12 straight games and has led Michigan in assists in 24 games this season. Morris has 19 games of five or more assists this year.
Darius Morris moved into a tie for fourth place with Rumeal Robinson (1989-90) on the Michigan single-season assist list with 184 assists this season.
Zack Novak grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Novak has grabbed seven or more rebounds nine times this season.
Michigan committed five turnovers in the game; U-M entered the game averaging 10.5 turnovers per game, fifth best in the nation.
The Maize and Blue shot 2-of-18 (11.1 percent) from behind the three-point line, the lowest percentage in a game this season. The Wolverines had shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49) from three in the previous three games.
U-M started the game 5-of-5 from the floor but shot just 4-of-25 (16.0 percent) in the remainder of the first half.
Michigan committed just one turnover in the first half while dishing out seven assists.
For the third straight game, Michigan went with the starting lineup of Darius Morris, Stu Douglass, Zack Novak, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Jordan Morgan.
