ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's tennis head coach Bruce Berque announced Monday (Nov. 21) that junior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan HS) and sophomore Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.J./Old Bethpage JFK HS) have been voted by their teammates to serve as team co-captains for the 2012 season.
"One of the nice traditions within Michigan athletics is role of the team captain," said Berque. "It's a position on the team that's never taken lightly. Shaun and Evan should be especially proud, because they were voted as team captains by their teammates. That really means something, and I'm very confident that they'll both do a great job in leading our team this year."
The Wolverines' lone upperclassman, King, earned 2011 ITA All-America honors and is a two-time All-Big Ten Conference selection. He posted a 30-9 record, including a 21-3 dual record, as a sophomore last season and reached the Round of 16 at the NCAA Individual Championships. Holding the No. 8 ITA preseason ranking, King kicked off the 2011-12 season with a 12-4 fall record, including a pair of wins over top-five Ohio State opponents. He holds career records of 63-26 in singles and 46-28 in doubles.
Bernstein registered a 22-17 singles record, including a 6-4 mark in Big Ten duals, during his rookie campaign last season and went 16-17 in doubles competition. He teamed with King during the recent fall season to post an 8-3 doubles record, as the nation's No. 33-ranked tandem, and advanced to the semifinals at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional.
Michigan will return to competition in the New Year, heading to the Key Biscayne Individuals, scheduled for Jan. 6-8 at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Fla.
