Schultz Named WSGA Player of the Year

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's golfer Jack Schultz (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay HS) has been named the 2011 Wisconsin State Golf Association Player of the Year.
"This is a great honor for me and my family," said Schultz. "I am excited to be named the Wisconsin amateur player of the year. It shows the results of hard work and is something I'll be proud of for the rest of my life."
Schultz began the summer with a victory in the WSGA Match Play Championship at the Links at Grand Geneva (June 13-16). After five straight match wins, Schultz squared off against Ricky Hearden in the championship match. Two down with two holes to play, Schultz drained a 30-foot birdie putt on 17 and made par from a fairway bunker on 18 to win both holes and extend the match. On the first extra hole, Schultz hit his approach shot to five feet and sank his birdie putt to prevail.
In July, Schultz used a two-over 286 total to finish as the medalist runner-up at the Wisconsin Amateur Championship at Maple Bluff Country Club (July 18-21) in Madison, Wis. After opening with rounds of 73 and 74, he put himself in contention with a five-under 66 in the third round and closed with a 73 in the final round to finish a single shot out of medalist honors.
Schultz closed the summer by tying for 12th with a 295 72-hole total at the Wisconsin State Open at the Blackwolf Run's Meadow Valleys course (Aug. 15-17). After taking the first-day lead with a 69, he followed with rounds of 77 and 78 before closing with a 71 to earn the top-15 finish.
In addition to his WSGA summer success, Schultz highlighted the summer by playing in U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore. After shooting 77-71 in stroke-play qualifying to advance to match play, Schultz won his first two matches to advance to the Sweet 16 before dropping a 4-and-3 decision to Daniel Miernicki.
