Wolverines Conclude Singles Play at Big Ten Indoors

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team concluded singles play at the Big Ten Indoor Tennis Championships on Sunday (Oct. 30) at Iowa's Hawkeye Tennis and Recreations Complex.
Freshman Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J./Keystone National HS) posted a 3-1 record to headline the Wolverines' singles effort, advancing to the quarterfinals, where he fell to Michigan State's Drew Lied, 6-2, 6-3. After sweeping his opening-day competition, Zhu defeated Illinois' Bruno Abdelnour, 6-3, 7-6 (4), to advance the quarterfinal round.
All three Wolverine rookies won their first two singles matches.
Freshman Eli Brown (Toronto, Ontario/City Academy) earned back-to-back 6-4, 6-4 decisions against Penn State's Bryan Weinetz and Michigan State's Denis Bogatov before falling to fifth-seeded Jonas Dierchx of Iowa, 6-2, 6-4, in the third round.
Freshman Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) cruised on the first day, defeating Purdue's Thomas Kroczek, 6-3, 6-2, and Penn State's Thomas Hanzlik, 7-6 (5), 6-1, before losing to Michigan State's 12th-seeded Aaron Pfister, 6-4, 6-4, in the third round.
Sophomore Alex Buzzi (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) split four matches in the singles tournament, earning wins over Michigan State's Gijs Linders, 6-2, 6-2, and the Spartans' Denis Bogatov, 6-1, 6-3.
Buzzi and sophomore Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys' School) posted a perfect 4-0 record en route to the Big Ten Indoor doubles title on Friday (Oct. 28). The Wolverine duo defeated Michigan State's Austin Brooks and Pfister, 8-4, in the championship final.
Junior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan Prep) will participate in singles draw at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, scheduled for Thursday-Sunday (Nov. 3-6) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
