STORRS, Conn. -- Playing the third team with a top-six ranking in the country in two weeks, the University of Michigan field hockey team fell 2-0 to No. 5 Connecticut on Sunday (Sept. 5) at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex. The Huskies scored a goal in each half to improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Wolverines fell to 0-4.
The Huskies' first goal came on a penalty-corner deflection at 17:44, as Robin Kleine scored on helpers from Jestine Angelini and Allison Angulo. UConn outshot the Wolverines, 8-3, in the first half, but U-M was in striking distance as senior/junior Christi Barwick (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) had five first-half saves.
Michigan outshot UConn 6-2 in the second 35 minutes but could not get one past Husky goalkeeper Sara Mansfield, who stopped two shots apiece from seniors Vanessa Sekhon (West Vancouver, B.C./Collingwood) and Meredith Way (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), while senior/junior Katie Adams (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) hit the post in the 53rd minute.
Connecticut took a two-goal lead at 48:35 when Ali Blankmeyer deflected a cross from Anne Jeute past Barwick for her first goal of the season.
Michigan opens its home schedule Friday (Sept. 10) against No. 12 James Madison. Game time is at 4 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field. This is the beginning of a five-game homestand for the Wolverines.
