Wolverines Start Fall Season at Miami Tournament

The University of Michigan women's tennis team kicks off the fall portion of the schedule this weekend (Fri-Sun., Sept 24-26) at the Miami Fall Tournament in Coral Gables, Fla. All nine Wolverines will be making the trip south in the first of six fall tournaments. Joining U-M at Miami is UCF, South Florida and Miami. Following is a schedule of play:
Friday, Sept. 24
1 p.m. -- UCF (doubles)
3 p.m. -- South Florida (singles)
Saturday, Sept. 25
10 a.m. -- UCF (singles)
1 p.m. -- Miami (doubles)
Sunday, Sep. 26
10 a.m. -- Miami (singles)
1 p.m. -- South Florida (doubles)
Ranked Wolverines -- Senior Denise Muresan (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson), who was a 2010 ITA All-American, enters the fall season with a No. 12 national ranking. Senior Whitney Taney (Edina, Minn./Edina) is the only other Wolverine to garner a preseason ranking, coming in at No. 103. Taney and senior Rika Tatsuno (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) are the No. 4 doubles duo, their highest ranking together. [ Full ITA Rankings ]
Captains -- Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno were voted as captains by their teammates for the 2010-11 season. Taney repeats as captain, while Tatsuno earned the distinction for the first time. [ Full Release ]
Big Events at the VTC -- The Wolverines will be at the Varsity Tennis Center twice during the fall season, hosting the Wolverine Invitational, Oct. 1-3, before hosting the USTA/ITA Midwest Championships, Oct. 21-26. During the dual-match season, U-M will host the ITA Kick-Off Event, Jan. 29-30, 2011, along with the 2011 Big Ten Championships, April 28-May 1. [ Hosting Big Tens Highlights U-M's 2010-11 Schedule ]
A Look Back -- The Wolverines had their most successful season in 2010, setting the program record for wins (24) and winning their first Big Ten championship since 1997. Denise Muresan became the program's second All-American as the Maize and Blue reached the Sweet 16. Muresan was named Big Ten Player of the Year, sophomore Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) won Freshman of the Year and Ronni Bernstein was Coach of the Year. Making Their Debut -- Freshmen Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) and Sam Critser (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) will both make their debut in the Maize and Blue this weekend.
Coaching Staff -- Head coach Ronni Bernstein enters her fourth year in Ann Arbor, compiling a 61-18 overall record and 28-2 Big Ten mark in her first three years. Bernstein was named the 2010 Big Ten Coach of the Year and ITA Midwest Coach of the Year. Teryn Ashley-Fitch is in her fifth year at Michigan and was promoted to associate head coach this past summer after earning ITA Midwest Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2010.
