ZIONSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team kicked off the 2010-11 campaign with a ninth-place finish today (Sunday, Sept. 12) at the two-day Wolf Run Intercollegiate, held at the Wolf Run Country Club.
After the tournament opened to a rainy start yesterday (Saturday, Sept. 11), the Wolverines sat in a tie for fourth with a 588 36-hole total following back-to-back 294s. After a 303 final round today, the Maize and Blue slid into ninth at 891.
U-M senior Alexander Sitompul (Jakarta, Indonesia/Bradenton Prep Academy [Fla.]) led the Wolverines individually for the first since the 2009 NCAA Finals with a 221, 15th-place total following cards of 74, 74 and 73, while classmate Lion Kim (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary Prep School) closed two shots back at 223 (76-72-75) to tie for 23rd.
After a strong start that led U-M after 36 holes (72-75/147), junior Matt Thompson (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview HS) found trouble in the final round, shooting an 82 to tie for 54th at 229. Sophomore Jack Schultz (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay HS) also got off to a solid start with a 72 before shooting a round in the 80s for just the second time in his career with an 80 in the second round, which resulted in him tying for 58th at 230 (72-80-78).
In his first collegiate event and start, freshman Joey Garber (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) got off to a shaky start with an opening 85 but recovered in the second round with a two-over 73. He then shot a 77 to finish tied for 72nd at 235 (85-73-77). Sophomore Rahul Bakshi (Chandigarh, India/St. John's HS) played as an individual and tied for 62nd at 231 (77-75-79).
The Wolverines continue their fall season with a trip to the Chicago area for Northwestern's Windon Memorial Classic (Sun-Mon., Sept. 26-27) at the North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Andrew Sapp
On the opening tournament at Wolf Run ... "We had some struggles today and we put some big numbers up. We really just could not get the drivers going and when you cannot do that it can cost you -- especially on a tough course like this. Extra shots chipping out can add up quickly. We just had too many sixes, sevens and eights on the scorecard and that hurt us. We are a veteran team and we have to be able to handle adversity better. When you are clicking along and then boom you hit a big number, you cannot press. When you press the next thing you know you put up another big number and then the round can get out of control. However, we will come back and get back to work. We can learn from this and make sure we get ready for the next tournament in a few weeks. We just have to play better in the final round. You cannot keep going backwards."
