ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Looking to broaden its impact on the area via charitable donations generated by its signature event, the University of Michigan's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is accepting applications from any charity interested in being considered a beneficiary of Mock Rock 2011. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, Sept. 7.
"We are asking any and all charities to apply to be a cause of Mock Rock," said Taylor Day, 2011 Mock Rock chair and a coxswain on the U-M rowing team. "This year we hope to diversify how the funds raised through Mock Rock are allocated. We ideally want to reach a wider range of people, and our goal is to directly affect these people's lives."
SAAC's goal is to raise $100,000 to be allocated to organizations in need. The Mock Rock chairs will select and notify approximately six finalists. The field will then be narrowed down to about three via a vote by SAAC with the input of all student-athletes through their team representatives. The winners will be announced the last week of September.
Mock Rock, a variety show featuring skits from Michigan's varsity student-athletes, was conceived by a group of U-M student-athletes in 1999 to honor the late wrestler Jeff Reese, and the money raised from the first events endowed a scholarship in his name.
As Mock Rock grew dramatically into a viable and sustainable project, SAAC shifted its focus to giving back to the community in recognition of all the support it gives student-athletes. In subsequent years, Mock Rock proceeds have benefited C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and philanthropic organizations such as Telling It, 826 Michigan and Student-Athletes Leading Social Change (SALSC).
This upcoming year, the annual Mock Rock is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at Hill Auditorium.
SAAC is a student-run organization comprised of representatives from each varsity and club varsity athletic team at U-M, under the legislation of the Big Ten and NCAA Division I. As a governing body for the student athletic community, SAAC engages with the Michigan Athletic Department, as well as the University of Michigan at large, including the general student population through all its governing bodies and organizations. SAAC is the voice of more than 750 student-athletes striving to create leadership opportunities, through organizing and participating in athletic events, campus activities and community service.
