Mon-Tue., Aug. 23-24 -- Lion Kim's bid to add another USGA title to his resume fell short at the U.S. Amateur Championship in University Place, Wash., as his two-round total of 153 (+10) left him in a tie for 118th and out of the 64-player match play field. Kim opened play on Monday with a seven-over 78 at lengthy (7,742 yards) Chambers Bay, and he made three birdies during his round of 75 (+3) at the Home Course on Tuesday. Mon-Tue., Aug. 16-17 -- Recent graduate Billy McKay closed tied for fourth with a 212 tally (71-71-70) at the 89th GAM Championship at the Flint Golf Club in Flint, Mich. Incoming freshman Joey Garber tied for 15th at 219 (69-76-74), while Michigan head coach Andrew Sapp shot a 150 (73-77) and just missed the qualifying cut by a single shot. [ GAM ]
Monday, Aug. 16 -- Former Wolverine Bill Rankin shot a 70 and finished as the medalist runner-up in the qualifier for the Canadian Tour's 2010 Economical Insurance Group Seaforth Country Classic. It marks the first Canadian Tour event for Rankin. In addition, former Wolverines Brian Ottenweller (76) and Tim Schaetzel (77) both tried to qualify but did not advance.

Thu-Sun., Aug. 12-15 -- Lion Kim continued his strong summer play with a fourth-place finish at the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship at the Redtail Golf Course on the London Hunt & Country Club in London, Ontario. Kim finished with a nine-under 279 tally after rounds of 68, 71, 71 and 69. [ Final Leaderboard | Kim's Scorecard ]
Mon-Thu., Aug. 9-12 -- Incoming freshman Joey Garber continued his torrid play in amateur championships, winning the Michigan Junior Amateur Championship at the Dearborn Country Club. With the win, Garber becomes the first player to capture both the Michigan Amateur and the Michigan Junior Amateur titles in the same year. For the third straight year, he won stroke play medalist honors, this time with a seven-under 203 (67-70-66). Earning the No. 1 seed, he defeated Eric Giddlings, 7-and-5, in the first round before defeating Rick Voyvodic, 4-and-3, to advance to the match play semifinal for the third straight year. With a 3-and-1 win over Jared Dalga in the semifinal, he advanced to the championship match against Tyler Pope-Ferguson. After being three-down through 10 holes, Garber caught fire to square the match by winning three of the next six holes. After the duo halved the final two holes, the match was extended back to the first hole. In the first extra hole, Garber smashed his drive straight down the middle, leaving himself 85 yards to the pin. After knocking a sand wedge to within six feet, Garber found himself in prime position to take the hole and the title. Pope-Furgeson ,who hit his drive behind a tree in the right rough, faced a 20-footer for bogey and conceded the hole -- and the championship -- to Garber. [ Michigan Junior Amateur | Match Play ]
Tue-Sat., Aug. 3-7 -- With a 3-and-2 loss to Jeffrey Kang, Lion Kim was eliminated in the first round of the 16-player match play at the Western Amateur at the Skokie Country Club in Glencoe, Ill. Kim advanced to match play after finishing 11th in stroke play qualifying with a one-under 212 (70-70-72) tally. Jack Schultz advanced past the first stroke play cut of 44 but closed tied for 45th at 220 (71-73-77) and did not move on to match play. Other Wolverines in the field included Matt Thompson, who tied for 71st at 148 (71-77), and Joey Garber, who tied for 122nd at 154 (80-74).

Tue-Sat., July 27-31 -- After the big win the USAPL, Lion Kim continued his summer playing schedule with a trip to Niagara Falls, N.Y., for the 2010 Porter Cup. He tied for 26th with a one-under 279 72-hole total. After back-to-back 71s to open his event, he shot a two-under 68 and closed with a one-under 69 to tie with six others for the 26th spot. Mon-Wed., July 26-28 -- Former Wolverine Andy Matthews took medalist honors at the Tournament of Championship played at Boyne Mountain, Alpine Course in Boyne Falls, Mich. After opening with a round of seven-under 65, he followed with an even-par 72 to sit in third going into the final day. With a two-under 70, he closed with a nine-under 207 tally and win by two shots. [ Event Results ]
Thursday, July 22 -- Incoming freshman Joey Garber is the second alternate for the U.S. Amateur after he shot a 143 (71-72) at his sectional qualifier at the Boyne Resorts Heather Course in Harbor Springs, Mich. [ Sectional Qualifiers ]
Mon-Sat., July 12-17 -- The 2010 champion! Lion Kim took a lead and never looked back as he went on to win the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship with a 6-and-5 win over David McDaniel in the championship match. En route to the title, Kim came from behind to defeat Kevin Phelan, 1-up, in the semifinal to earn a trip to the championship match. Earlier in the day, Kim defeated Chris Williams, 1-up, to advance to the Final Four of match play. Throughout the match play event, Kim has advanced after posting victories over 37th-seed Chase Wright, 2-and-1 (Sweet 16), 12th-seed Joon Heui Lee, 1-up (second round) and against 44th-seed Ross Canavan, 6-and-5 (first round). Using rounds of 73 and 70 for a 143 total, Kim tied for 21st in stroke play to advance to match play. Mon-Thu., July 5-8 -- Fresh off his win at the Michigan Amateur Championship, incoming freshman Joey Garber won the AJGA Coca-Cola Junior Championship with a six-under 210 tally. After posting rounds of 69, 68 and 73 at the Boyne Highlands Resort, Heather Course in Harbor Springs, Mich., Garber won the event by four strokes. [ Results | Garber Scorecard ]
Monday, June 28 -- Jack Schultz won the Capital Times Invitational at the Odana Hills Golf Club in Madison, Wis., in a one-hole playoff. Schultz held medalist honors after 36 holes at 11-under 133 (68-65), before Andrew Steinhofer used a second-round, 10-under 62 to equal Schultz's 133. With medalist honors going to a playoff, Schultz won on the 354-yard first hole after hitting his drive 10 yards short of the green and getting up-and-down for birdie. Steinhofer could not extend the playoff after hitting his drive in the right fairway trap, hitting his sand shot to 12 feet and barely missing his birdie putt. Schultz finished the tournament with 13 birdies and an eagle in 37 holes. [ Full Release ]
Tue-Sat., June 22-26 -- Incoming freshman Joey Garber became the 24th Wolverine to win the Michigan Amateur Championship held at the Oakhurst Golf & Country Club in Clarkston, Mich. After Garber earned the 34th seed in the 64-player match play field, he defeated Eric Lilleboe, 2-and-1, in the final to claim the title. Matt Thompson, who was the runner-up in 2009 at the Michigan Am, advanced to the third round of match play before being eliminated by Jeff Champine, 1-up. Recent graduate Billy McKay qualified for match play and was eliminated in the first round by Mike Nagy in 19 holes. Incoming freshman Matt Felsenfeld did not qualify for match play, tying for 141st in stroke play with a 171. [ Site ]
Wed-Sat., June 23-26 -- tied for 44th at the 49th Northeast Amateur Championship played at the Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I. After opening with a 71, Kim followed with rounds of 70 and 69 to move into the top 25. A final-round 78 gave him a 288 tally and a 44th-place finish. [ Site ]Lion Kim
Friday, June 25 -- Alexander Sitompul (69-69) used a 138 total to tie for medalist honors at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Qualifier in Noblesville, Ind. Wed-Sat., June 16-19 -- tied for sixth with a one-under 279 72-hole tally at the Monroe Invitational Championship at the Monroe Golf Club in Pittsford, N.Y. Mon-Thu., June 14-17 -- The 2010 Michigan Open had 10 Wolverines in the field. After leading for 54 holes, former Wolverine Andy Matthews (64-66-69-74) closed fourth with an 11-under 273. Other U-M finishes included former Wolverines Scott Hayes (70-69-72-70) and Nick Pumford (68-66-74-73) tied for 16th at three-under 281. Current Wolverine (71-71-70-71) and former Wolverine Brian Ottenweller (66-70-72-75) both tied for 23rd at one-under 283, while (71-69-71-73) tied for 29th at even-par 284. Former Wolverine Bill Rankin (67-73-74-73) tied for 44th at 287, while former Wolverine (74-70-71-74) tied for 51st at 289. Wednesday, June 2 -- Playing in the TaylorMade adidas Collegiate series event at Purdue's Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind., took the 36-hole title with a 15-shot victory.
