PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior LHP Nikki Nemitz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina HS) of the University of Michigan softball team nabbed the Big Ten Conference's final Pitcher of the Week accolade of the 2010 season, the conference office announced Monday (May 17). Nemitz closed out the regular-season slate with a decisive complete-game effort in the series finale at Iowa.
Celebrating her 22nd birthday in style, Nemitz tossed a gem from the circle, striking out seven Hawkeye batters while allowing one hit and a pair of walks en route to a complete-game shutout -- her sixth of the season. The Wolverine hurler helped her own cause with a two-run single in the top of the seventh -- as part of a 2-for-4 effort -- and followed with a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning, forcing three straight groundouts on just eight pitches.
The win improved Nemitz's record to 20-3 on the season; she becomes the only pitcher in Wolverine program history to earn four straight 20-win seasons. With a career record of 91-20, she ranks third among Michigan's all-time winningest pitchers.
The Big Ten weekly honor is the third for Nemitz this season, second in as many weeks and ninth in her collegiate career. Michigan captured more than half -- eight of 14 -- of the league's Pitcher of the Week accolades in 2010 as junior RHP Jordan Taylor (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) claimed five such accolades.
Nemitz and the Wolverines will host an NCAA Regional for the ninth consecutive year, welcoming Notre Dame, Illinois State and Wright State to the Wilpon Softball Complex this weekend (Fri-Sun., May 21-23). Michigan opens play against Wright State at 7 p.m. on Friday evening.
