BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Junior Alison Mantel (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) and freshman Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) of the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan water polo team were named CWPA Western Division Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced on Wednesday (April 28). The duo guided the Maize and Blue to a ninth straight CWPA Western Division title on Saturday (April 24), getting together on the game-winning goal in the championship game.
Mantel tallied five points on the weekend to go with a pair of steals and two drawn ejections. After tallying a goal and an assist against Gannon in the semifinal, Mantel ignited for three points, including an assist on the deciding goal.
Golden was strong in both ends of the pool, posting four points, seven steals, two field blocks and three drawn ejections. Taking on the Lady Knights, Golden pulled three steals and both of her blocks while creating a pair of power-play opportunities. In the finals against Indiana, Golden committed four thefts and scored the deciding goal on a one-timer from Mantel.
The Wolverines will look to defend back-to-back conference titles at the CWPA Eastern Championship next weekend (Fri-Sun., April 30-May 2) in College Park, Md.
