COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan water polo team swept through the opening day of the Terrapin Tournament on Saturday (April 17), downing host Maryland, 9-3, and George Washington, 12-6, inside the Eppley Recreation Center.
Freshman Kiki Golden (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) scored a hat trick against the Colonials and sophomore Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) tallied twice in each game to pace the Wolverines.
Freshman Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) and fifth-year senior Brittany May (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) split time in the cage in the nightcap after Adamson tended the cage for the full 32 minutes against the Terps. Adamson made 21 stops and tallied four assists, while May posted 10 blocks.
Michigan scored the first seven goals against Maryland and carried a shutout inside the final seven minutes of the contest. Already leading by three in the second period, the Wolverines had all they needed when junior Lauren Orth (Poway, Calif./Poway) took advantage of a Maryland goalkeeper kickout to create a 4-0 advantage. The Wolverines expanded their lead in the third when senior Leah Robertson (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) pulled a steal and sent Orth on a breakaway for her second goal of the game. Cobb scored back-to-back goals at two meters to start the fourth frame before Maryland was finally able to solve the Michigan netminders. The Terps scored three straight goals before U-M responded with markers from Robertson and junior Alison Mantel (Miami, Fla./Gulliver).
Eight different Wolverines scored in the afternoon game against George Washington. Junior Ryley Plunkett (Modesto, Calif./Johansen) sparked a five-goal run to start the game. Leading 6-1, junior Sarah Roberts (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) found the back of the cage early in the second period with Golden tallying her first a minute later as U-M led 9-3 at halftime.
Golden and Cobb alternated scoring out of the break with the freshman depositing the sophomore's rebound for the third goal after halftime as each team tallied three in the third. Neither team found the back of the net in the final frame as the Wolverines cruised to the 12-6 victory.
Michigan will put the wraps on the 2010 regular season tomorrow morning (Sunday, April 18) with Maryland at 10 a.m. for day two of the Terrapin Tournament.
