
Rowing Takes on Michigan State, Notre Dame in Spring Opener

EAST LANSING, Mich.- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team opened its spring campaign on Saturday (March 27) with a double dual against No.7-ranked Michigan State and Notre Dame on Lake Ovid.
The Wolverines saw mixed results in the season opener. Michigan sent three varsity boats and was paced by second-place finishes by the first and varsity eights. In the first varsity eight race, Michigan was able to keep pace with leader Michigan State, but the Spartans pulled away to take the race with a time of 6:29.6. The Wolverines crossed the line, just 4.1 seconds behind MSU with a time of 6:33.7 and Notre Dame finished third with a time of 6:46.9.
In the second varsity eight race, U-M also took second place with a time of 6:49.1, 5:06 seconds behind Michigan State who crossed the finish line with a winning time of 6:44.0. Notre Dame took third with a time of 6:54.9. Notre Dame picked up a win in the varsity four. The Irish led from start to finish and crossing the line with a time of 7:35.1, with Michigan State taking second (7:42.8) and Michigan earning third (7:50.4).
Michigan had an outstanding showing from its two novice boats, winning both of its races. U-M's novice eight crossed the finish line with a time of 7:04.3, nearly two and a half seconds ahead of second-place Michigan State (7:06.6). Notre Dame finished in third place with a time of 7:07.8. The second novice eight also won their race leading from start to finish with a time of 7:22.2. Michigan State took second (7:26.6) while Notre Dame finished third (7:35.3).
Michigan is back on the water next week when they head to Charlottesville, Va., for races against Virginia and Clemson on Saturday (April 3).
