BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Junior Cara Reitz (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) scored eight times as the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan water polo team rolled Cal State East Bay, 16-3, and Wagner, 17-2, on day one of the Fluid Five at Indiana's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Freshman Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) made 10 saves and chipped in five assists as U-M had its counterattack clicking in the opener. Sophomore Morgan Turner (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) countered with 11 stops in the nightcap victory.
The pool was littered with headwear as four different Wolverines tallied hat tricks. Reitz, who turned the trick in each game, was joined by juniors Sarah Roberts (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) and Alison Mantel (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) and sophomore Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville). Freshman Lauren Colton (Tustin, Calif./Tesoro) had five assists against Wagner.
Michigan blasted out to a 5-0 lead in the first period against CSUEB, led by captain Reitz, who had completed the hat trick before halftime, and a pair of goals from junior Keller Felt (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla). Reitz added two more in the final period to give her a career-high five goals. Sophomore Roxanne Mansfield (San Mateo, Calif./St. Francis) and Roberts scored in the third to give U-M an 11-1 advantage heading into the fourth frame, where Roberts completed her second hat trick of the season.
Wagner took the first lead of the second game, scoring 41 seconds into the contest. It was all Wolverines from there as Michigan scored six straight goals, including a trio from Mantel, in the first half, putting the Wolverines up 7-2 at the break. Reitz continued the flurry with two early markers in the third period before Cobb scored three straight goals in the final stanza to give her four in the game.
The Wolverines conclude Fluid Five play on Sunday (March 28) with division foe Gannon at 11:30 a.m.
