
2010 Michigan Olympic Updates: Ice Dancing

Four U-M students make up two-thirds of the United States' ice dancing team for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. Meryl Davis and Charlie White took first place at the U.S. Championships in January to secure their spot on the Olympic team, while Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates placed third. Both pairs are making their first appearance in the Olympics. Davis and White train in Canton, Mich.; Bates and Samuelson train in Ann Arbor.
Monday, Feb. 22
Meryl Davis and Charlie White claimed silver medals in their first Olympics, as Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who train at the same facility as Davis and White in Canton, Mich., became the first North American ice dancing pair to win gold. Davis and White posted the second-best free dance score (107.19) and, with a 215.74 total, finished nearly six points back of the Canadians (221.57), who entered the night with a 2.60-point lead and expanded it with the night's high score (110.42). Russia's Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin (207.64) took bronze. Sunday, Feb. 21
With the second-best original dance score (67.08), Meryl Davis and Charlie White moved into second place with a 108.55 total. They trail Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir (111.15) by 2.60 and are nearly two points ahead of Russia's Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin (106.60) going into the final segment, Monday's free dance. Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates moved up three spots to 11th place overall (85.36) with the 11th-best original dance score (53.99).
Friday, Feb. 19
A score of 41.47 put Meryl Davis and Charlie White in third place after the compulsory dance portion of the ice dancing competition. They trail Russia's Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin (43.76) and Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir (42.74) and are slightly ahead of fellow Americans Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto (40.83) heading into Sunday's original dance segment. Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates sit 14th among the 23 teams after scoring 31.37 in the compulsory dance, which makes up about 20 percent of the final score.
