PRINCETON, N.J. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan water polo team completed a sweep of the Princeton Invitational with day two wins over Harvard, 13-3, and Wagner, 12-5, on Sunday (Feb. 21) in DeNunzio Pool.
Freshman Alex Adamson (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) earned the first two victories of her collegiate career, making nine saves against Harvard and eight versus Wagner.
Sophomore Meagan Cobb (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville), junior Alison Mantel (Miami, Fla./Gulliver) and freshman Lauren Colton (Tustin, Calif./Tesoro) all had three goals on the day. Mantel also had a playmaker (three assists) against Wagner.
The Wolverines used a pair of five-meter penalty shots to help build a 4-0 lead after one period against Wagner. Junior Lauren Orth (Poway, Calif./Poway) and senior Casie Kelly (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) interspersed successful five-meter penalty shots around goals at the set by Cobb and junior Sarah Roberts (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor). Wagner rattled off four straight goals extending into the second half before U-M's offense reignited to the tune of six unanswered with junior Cara Reitz (Miami, Fla./Gulliver), Golden, Orth and senior Leah Robertson (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) scoring one and Mantel netting a pair to put U-M up by a 10-4 tally. The teams exchanged goals before a Colton breakaway goal capped the scoring.
Michigan posted a strong defensive effort against the Crimson, led by Golden's career-high seven thefts. U-M jumped out to a 6-1 lead at the break, aided by a power play that was clicking. The Wolverines went 6-for-10 with the extra attacker while remaining out of the box themselves, yielding only six extra-man chances for Harvard. The defense carried over into the final two stanzas as U-M outscored the opposition 7-2 in the back 16 minutes of play.
Michigan swings back to the West Coast next weekend to face Cal Lutheran on Friday (Feb. 26) at 3 p.m. PST before taking part in the UC Irvine Invitational (Sat-Sun., Feb. 27-28).
