ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan softball head coach Carol Hutchins announced on Monday (Oct. 4) the hiring of Tara Wallach to its newly added director of softball operations position.
"I think we got someone who is really overqualified in Tara," said Hutchins. "She's an MBA, and she brings a great amount of experience in the administrative area, which is exactly what this position is. I think, as we learn how to use this position, she is going to take a lot off our plate, so we can really focus on coaching our kids. I am really excited about that, and I'm really excited about her."
Prior to joining the Wolverine program, Wallach spent three years at her alma mater, Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio. She was the assistant director for event operations (2007-09), assisting with the management of all aspects of event logistics for 18 sports, and more recently, served as an academic advising assistant. Her primary sport responsibilities included football, volleyball, field hockey, women's soccer, swimming and diving, women's basketball, track and field and baseball, and she was also responsible for hiring, training and supervising a staff of 100-plus employees.
During her time at Miami, she was active in numerous athletics projects. Wallach authored and was awarded the NCAA D1 Women's Basketball grant proposal (2010), participated in the Committee to Create University Athletics 'Culture of Champions' Plan (2007-09) and assisted with the planning of athletic department activities. She was also a guest services intern with Palace Sports and Entertainment in 2006.
"I've worked in game operations and the event management side of things," said Wallach, "and I've seen all the small, intricate details that go into making a team successful -- all the behind-the-scene things that the coaches don't typically want to do and shouldn't necessarily be focusing on. So, I'm looking to help the softball coaches focus on coaching, recruiting and winning championships by taking all administrative stuff off their plates. I just want to help the program expand and continue to grow."
A native of Shelby Twp., Mich., Wallach graduated from Miami with a bachelor's degree in health and sports studies in 2006 and earned a Masters of Business Administration in 2010.
