ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped its opening contest of the 2009 season to Arkansas, 2-0, in front of 758 fans at the U-M Soccer Complex. The game marked the first contest for the women on the competition field of the new facility.
Junior/sophomore Kristen Keane(Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) made one save as the opening-day starter. Freshman Eunnie Kim(Hubley, Nova Scotia/Sir John A MacDonald) notched two shots on the evening in her U-M debut, while six other Wolverines tallied shots in the contest.
The Wolverines had an early opportunity to score when sophomore Kristen Goncalves(Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard Catholic) found Kim on a cross a little over six minutes into the contest, but a great save by the Arkansas keeper kept the game scoreless. U-M's other opportunity came when Goncalves tried for the far bar, but another diving save by the Arkansas goalie once again kept the Wolverines off the board.
Arkansas broke through in the 37th minute on a shot from 30 yards that eluded the reach of a leaping Keane. The Razorbacks got an insurance goal in the 78th minute and were able to stave off pressure from U-M in the waning minutes of the contest.
Michigan will start a three-game road trip on Sunday(Aug. 23)at Valparaiso. The Wolverines and Crusaders are set to kick off at 5 p.m. CDT.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the offensive struggles ... "I don't think we attacked like we meant to score a goal. I think we did very well getting up from the back into the final third, but then we wanted to go back again. I am very disappointed that we didn't take the kind of risks to score goals."
On the new field ... "Michigan has given us a great place to play. I want to thank the administration for providing us this wonderful venue. It is great to be able to play at home, at night and in front of our own fans."
