
Wolverines to Watch: Week of May 18-May 24

Carl Buchanon (South Bend, Ind.)-- Men's Track and Field Buchanon, a sophomore, has been enjoying the best season of his short collegiate career and in doing so he has become one of the top sprinters in the Big Ten. Buchanon finished first in the 400-meter hurdles at the Big Ten Championships with a career-best time of 50.84 to earn his first career Big Ten title. He also set a new career high in the 110-meter hurdles with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 14.27. Buchanon is one of just two Big Ten athletes to qualify for the regional championship in both events. Buchanon will look to continue his success at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship in Louisville, Ky., this weekend (Fri-Sat., May 29-30). | ||

Sarah Curtis (Reno, Nev.)-- Women's Gymnastics Curtis, a junior all-arounder, earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District At-Large second team honors, as voted on by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A biology major with future plans to attend medical school, Curtis is an NACGC/W Academic All-American, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and has earned three U-M Athletic Academic Achievement Award honors in her three seasons with the Maize and Blue. In her junior campaign, Curtis was the only Wolverine to compete in every event in all 13 meets, winning seven titles and advancing to the NCAA Championships as an all-around competitor. | ||

Bree Evans (Bloomington, Calif.)-- Softball Freshman outfielder Bree Evans went 5-for-8 (.625) in NCAA Super Regional play this past weekend (Fri-Sat., May 22-23), helping guide the Wolverines to the Women's College World Series for the ninth time in program history and the first time since 2005, the year they captured the national championship. Evans collected a single and a double during the title game vs. Baylor on Sunday, giving her a hit in all five of her NCAA postseason appearances. Evans is a combined 11-for-21 (.524) in NCAA Tournament play. The postseason string is part of a personal-best seven-game streak, dating back the regular-season home finale vs. Michigan State on May 8, one she hopes to continue in U-M's first WCWS contest vs. No. 4 Alabama this Thursday (May 28) at 7 p.m. on ESPN. | ||

Lion Kim (Lake Mary, Fla.) -- Men's Golf After finishing as the top Wolverine in four of the last six events, Lion Kim helped Michigan to its second straight NCAA Regional, where U-M closed fifth to advance to the NCAAChampionships for the first timeas a program in 12 years. The Wolverines will play 54 holes of stroke play and, if they close among the top eight, they will get a chance at match play for the team title. Overall, Kim leads the Maize and Blue with a 73.03 scoring average and five top-20 individual finishes. | ||

David Molk (Lemont, Ill.)-- Football Redshirt sophomore David Molk was one of 44 players named to the watch list for the 2009 Rimington Trophy, presented annually to the nation's top collegiate center. A returning starter from last season, Molk played every down at center last season for the Wolverines. He shared the Sophomore Award this spring with defensive lineman Ryan Van Bergen and holds the team and football program record in the squat (625 pounds). Molk is one of five sophomores on the Rimington award list. |
