ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 48-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team sent seniors Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS), Mike DePietro (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) and Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) out on a winning note in their final regular-season home match with a resounding 6-1 victory over No. 53 Indiana on Sunday afternoon (April 19) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (12-13, 6-4 Big Ten) claimed their fourth straight doubles point and posted straight-set singles wins at Nos. 2-6 to come away with their sixth team victory in seven tries.
The Hoosiers gained an early leg up in doubles with an 8-4 triumph at No. 3, but U-M responded with wins on the two remaining courts to grab a 1-0 lead. Mazlin and sophomore Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) built a 7-1 lead and held on for an 8-6 victory over Lachlan Ferguson and Stephen Vogl at No. 2, moving the Wolverine pair's dual-match record to a team-best 11-3. Michigan's No. 45-ranked duo of junior George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and sophomore Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) was able to outlast Indiana's No. 76-ranked tandem of Santiago Gruter and Jeremy Langer by a score of 8-6 at No. 1 to wrap up U-M's 15th doubles point of 2009.
Mazlin was the first player off in singles thanks to a quick 7-5, 6-2 win over Gruter at No. 2. Mazlin broke Gruter's serve late in the first set and carried the momentum into the second frame to clinch his 10th dual-match victory of the season. Navas closed out his opponent moments later, completing a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Will Kendall at No. 5 to improve to 11-3 in dual-match play. Junior Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) provided the clincher with a gutsy 7-5, 6-4 decision over Langer at No. 3. A winner of four straight matches, Sroczynski erased a 5-4 deficit in the first set by claiming a critical break in the 11th game.
With the team outcome decided, Michigan continued to battle and was victorious in two of the three remaining matches. Madden got back on a winning track at No. 4, earning a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Maxime Armengaud to finish the Big Ten season with a team-best 9-1 record. Sophomore/freshman Drew Daniel (Overland Park, Kan./Laurel Springs School) pulled out a solid 7-6(4), 7-5 triumph over Vogl at No. 6 for his team-high 25th overall victory of 2008-09. Daniel fought his way back from a 5-2 hole in the first set.
The Wolverines will enter the 2009 Big Ten Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 seed Northwestern on Friday (April 24) in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. U-M will host the annual conference tournament Thursday through Sunday (April 23-26) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
