IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Sophomore forward Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) posted her first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 10 rebounds and senior center Krista Phillips (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Aden Bowman Collegiate) scored a team-high 15 points as the University of Michigan women's basketball team picked up a win in the Big Ten opener at Iowa, 54-51, on Sunday (Dec. 6) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
With U-M leading 52-48 with three minutes remaining, Iowa's Kelly Krei hit a three-pointer to cut U-M's lead to 52-51, but the Wolverine defense held and a missed Iowa free throw sealed the victory. The Wolverines led from start to finish despite Iowa cutting the game to one possession late.
Junior guard Veronica Hicks (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood) extended her double-figure scoring streak to eight consecutive games with 11 points, while freshman guard Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel) had a career-best 10 rebounds.
The Wolverines took advantage of their size and outscored the Hawkeyes 34-14 in the paint, and U-M used its ability to run the floor, earning 12 fast-break points to Iowa's two.
Michigan raced out to a 17-4 first-half lead behind the play of interior players Phillips and Reynolds. The duo combined for 12 of Michigan's first 17 points as the Wolverines were shooting on all cylinders from the outset. Sophomore guard Courtney Boylan (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) found her game early and hit a triple from the left corner that kept the Wolverine offense rolling and kept the lead in double digits.
The Hawkeyes, playing with only eight players, were having a hard time getting shots to fall, but they used their defense to stay in the game and were able to get the once 13-point lead all the way down to seven points by getting to the charity stripe and a timely three-pointer from freshman Jamie Printy. Michigan, which had two late turnovers, clamped down on the defensive end and, with three baskets in the paint and a three-pointer from Hicks as time expired, took a 34-20 lead into the break.
Michigan's advantage came in the paint, outscoring Iowa, 20-4, in the first half. The Wolverines also had success when they pushed the ball and held an 8-0 advantage on fast breaks in the first frame.
Iowa opened the second half on a tear and quickly cut the lead to 10 points after forcing the Wolverines into two quick turnovers and trimmed the lead all the way down to six points, but Michigan took advantage of its ability to get out and run, using several fast-break baskets to keep the lead out of the Hawkeyes' reach. Iowa stayed close, however, as a three-pointer from Kamille Wahlin cut the Michigan lead to 49-44 at the 5:39 mark.
The Wolverines jump back into non-conference action on Thursday (Dec. 10) when they head to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to take on Boston College. Tipoff between the Wolverines and Eagles is set for 7 p.m. in BC's Silvio O. Conte Forum.
