Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On tonight's game ... "Any time you come down to this tournament, your goal is to play in the championship game so it's a tough game for the players and even the coaches, but we got through the game. I thought we did some good things in the game and some not-so-good things. Penalties in the second period kind of changed the momentum of the game, but nevertheless we got through it."
On this tournament ... "I think our team has a lot of pride. They know they played well last night and they didn't have much to show for it. They wanted to come back and have a good game tonight. There is a lot at stake in these games whether it's big picture like RPI. If you have any chance of making the tournament, what you do during the year in these non-conference games is important. To walk out of here with two losses would be a tough, tough week for Michigan."
On goalie Bryan Hogan ... "I thought he was sharp. He made a huge save in the last minute and a half of the game. It hit him in the mask. I thought he proved he's fine. Sometimes a goalie fights the puck and when he does, it's going to either hurt the team or you try to get them out of there. Glenn Hall told me a long time ago, he said 'I'll play every game, but if I start fighting the puck get me out of there.' That's kind of the way it is with goalies. Hogie is our goalie and he's good."
On getting scoring from unexpected players at the GLI ... "I think you see that in this tournament every year and if you document the scoring in the tournament year after year, it's amazing how many players score their first goal of the year. Don't ask me why. Maybe it's because they had a break with Christmas and they come back and they're more excited and can't wait to play or maybe it's just they get lucky."
On allowing one goal on the penalty kill ... "Well, I wasn't happy about the penalties period. We made the mistakes. We took the poor penalties and we paid for them. We were lucky. Our penalty killers did a great job in just giving up one goal."
U-M Freshman Forward Lindsay Sparks
On his first two career goals and eventual gamewinner ... "It was relieving I guess. I've been battling all year for that first goal. I've played about eight games, had a little bit of a shoulder injury earlier, but it was really nice to win the second game. Yesterday, we got that loss and wasn't deserving of the team, but it was an overall good game for the team today."
On your emotions ... "I'm pretty happy, getting the first and then second goal there and we won the game, put it away. It's a good feeling for everyone going back and starting the season back up against Western Michigan next weekend."
U-M Junior Forward Matt Rust
On winning the third-place game ... "Obviously you want to play in the [championship] game. It's tough waking up knowing you're playing in the third-place game. It's important, what coach said, at the end of the year trying to get invited to the NCAA Tournament."
On holding on for the win today ... "I think it shows something about our character on this team. The ability to come back after a heartbreaking loss like that is not easy. When you're spirits are down it's tough."
