BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's water polo team's first decade in the pool was deemed the best of any program in the Collegiate Water Polo Association as the Wolverines were voted the "Team of the Decade" by visitors to the CWPA website during the week of December 14-18. The conference office announced the results today (Tuesday, Dec. 22).
Michigan has built quite a resume since earning varsity status for the 2001 season. The Maize and Blue claimed four conference titles during the decade, emerging as Eastern champions in 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2009. Since finishing second in the division during its inaugural season, U-M has rattled off eight consecutive division championship runs.
The Wolverines are two wins shy of 250 as a program, owning a 248-105-1 record through nine seasons. U-M has been nearly unbeatable when clashing with division foes, posting a .955 winning percentage in 66 games between the CWPA West (39-3, 2004-pres.) and CWPA South (24-0, 2001-03).
Michigan head coach Matt Anderson, who became the program's second head coach in 2003, has been name division Coach of the Year four times and CWPA Eastern Coach of the Year on three occasions. Julie Hyrne (2006-09) and Betsey Armstrong (2002-05) have combined for three Eastern Most Valuable Player honors and, joined by Shana Welch (2004-07), account for seven division MVP selections. Armstrong, the starting goalkeeper on the U.S. National Team and an Ann Arbor native, was inducted into the conference Hall of Fame in 2008.
The Wolverines will announce the U-M Water Polo Team of the Decade in the upcoming issue of `M' Magazine. The digital publication will hit MGoBlue.com in late January.
