ANN ABROR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team came up short in its bid to knock off the Big Ten Conference champions, falling 2-0 to No. 22-ranked Penn State on Sunday (Nov. 8) at the U-M Soccer Complex's West Practice Field.

Sarah Stanczyk
Sophomore/freshman Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) made seven saves in the effort.
The Wolverines had to be on their toes defensively from the opening whistle. On the Nittany Lions' first trip into the U-M zone, Kopmeyer was called upon to make a diving save on an attempt at the far post. The rebound squirted to another attacker, but her shot was steered to safety. Michigan kept the Penn State shots to a safe distance until the 36th minute when PSU's Kate Schoepfer found a seam and put PSU up 1-0.
Michigan got its best chance of the afternoon following back-to-back corners in the 50th minute. Junior Sarah Stanczyk (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) picked off a clearing attempt on the latter set piece and ripped a shot from 25 yards that carried just over the crossbar. Penn State put the game out of reach in the 82nd minute, scoring from in tight off a cross into a crowd in the Wolverine goalmouth.
Michigan wraps up the 2009 season with a 6-9-5 record, improving on last season's win total by a pair of victories.
