EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team placed three players on the All-Big Ten Conference teams, the league announced Thursday evening (Nov. 5) at the annual tournament banquet. Junior midfielder Meredith Way (Newmanstown, Pa./Warwick) was named All-Big Ten first team, while redshirt junior midfielder Paige Laytos (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and junior forward Alicia Mayer (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) received second-team recognition. Way was an All-Big Ten second team selection in 2008 while Laytos earned an All-Big Ten first team honors in 2007.
Way led all Wolverines in scoring during the season with 19 goals and five assists for 43 points. Her 19 goals and 43 points were the most by a Wolverine since 2004 when Jessica Blake had 19 goals and 47 points. From Sept. 20 through Oct. 18, Way rattled off a career-best, nine-game point streak during which she posted 12 goals and three assists for 27 points. For the season, she had five two-goal games. Way had a pair of five-point efforts, tallying two goals and an assist at Ohio State (Oct. 17) and vs. Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament first round (Nov. 5).

Laytos finished the season fourth on U-M's point chart with three goals and five assists for 11 points. She had a season-high three points vs. Ball State (Sept. 13) with a goal and an assist. Laytos returned to the U-M lineup after having to redshirt the 2008 season due to injury.
Mayer was U-M's second-leading point getter with a career-high 16 points. Her seven goals were also a career-best showing. Mayer's best outing this season was at Northwestern as she scored two goals, including the game winner.
Senior back Jenner Johnson (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) was selected as Michigan's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, given annually to student-athletes who distinguish themselves through good sportsmanship and ethical behavior, as well as demonstrate academic excellence and good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
The Wolverines wrapped up the 2009 season with a 7-14 record, including a 2-4 mark against Big Ten competition.
