IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team struck back to counter an early deficit but could not hang on, falling at Iowa, 2-1, on Friday evening (Oct. 30) at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
Sophomore Kristen Goncalves (Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard Catholic) scored her third of the season, moving into a tie for the team lead, while sophomore/freshman Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) made six saves in the effort.
Michigan found itself behind early when Iowa jumped on the board in the 11th minute on rebound in the box to go ahead 1-0. Goncalves leveled the score four minutes later, steering around the goalkeeper and depositing a shot from the top of the box to cap a breakaway attempt.
Iowa was forced to be selective with its shots, missing the mark on just one shot between goals. Kopmeyer was up to the task, making five saves in the interim. It was not until the 64th minute that the Hawkeyes exacted the deciding goal on a shot from 25 yards out that caught the right corner of the net.
Michigan concludes its final road swing of the season with Sunday (Nov. 1) matinee at Illinois. The Wolverines and Fighting Illini will square off at 1 p.m. CST at the Illinois Soccer Stadium.
