BOSTON, Mass. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team erased a 2-0 third-period deficit before allowing the gamewinner with less than three minutes to play, falling at No. 3 Boston University, 3-2, on Saturday night (Oct. 24) at the Agganis Arena. Michigan scored at 10:04 and 14:30 of the final stanza to tie the game. A turnover behind U-M's net led to BU's game-winning goal with 2:31 left in regulation.
The defending NCAA champion Terriers scored on two of their seven power plays through the first 40 minutes of play to open up a 2-0 lead. Right wing Robbie Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) found the first chink in BU goalie Kieran Millan's pads, while center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) followed up just over four minutes later to tie the game. U-M bombarded Millan with 21 shots in the third period but could not get the go-ahead goal. BU's Joe Pereira took the puck from goalie Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.) in the game's final minutes and scored on a wraparound.
Michigan's offense was stalled for much of the first period as the Terriers received four straight power plays over the final 13:11 of the frame. BU capitalized on its third man-advantage with 3:47 on the clock. Kevin Shattenkirk's wrap around the boards was tipped behind the net by Hogan and went to Corey Trivino in the left corner. Trivino centered the puck to Zach Cohen, who immediately flicked it over Hogan's left shoulder.
Around BU's four power plays in the second period, U-M had a few sporadic chances. Shorthanded, David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) bobbled a centering pass in front of the Terrier net but was shut down by Millan's trapper at 4:20 on the clock.
Rust had a crack at rebound in the slot at 8:20, but the puck squirted wide left of the post.
Boston University went up 2-0 with a power-play goal at 12:59 of the second period. On the rush, Colby Cohen was allowed to walk in from the Michigan blue line to the top of the left circle for an uncontested slap shot that went high glove at 12:59.
The opening five minutes featured a multitude of penalties, both minor and major. BU committed the first two infractions -- a minor at 39 seconds and a major at 2:15 for hitting from behind. At 3:14, Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) was assessed a five-minute major for hitting from behind and Steve Kampfer (Jackson, Mich.) was given two minutes for shooting after the whistle. Eight seconds later, BU was called for charging. Despite the parade to the penalty boxes, neither team made a dent on the scoreboard.
Czarnik eventually scored his second goal in as many games at 10:04 of the third period. Streaking down the left side, Czarnik snapped a shot on goal that appeared to be stopped by Millan but had enough momentum to creep just over the goal line. Defenseman Chris Summers (Milan, Mich.) earned the assist.
Rust tied it up with 5:30 to play on a great dash down the left side. Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) passed to Rust as the duo broke over the BU blue line. Rust proceeded to skirt around his defender and lift a perfect backhand shot over a diving defenseman and the goalie's glove to the far right post.
Late in the third, out of his net to corral a dump-in, Hogan attempted to send a bouncing puck around the end boards to a defenseman. Pereira caught up to the puck behind U-M's net and wrapped it around in around for the clinching goal.
Michigan travels to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., next weekend (Fri-Sat., Oct. 30-31) to face Lake Superior State. Faceoff for both games is set for 7:05 p.m.
